Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell
By Susanna Clark
In an alternate history 19th century, magic appears to be lost forever. However, when visited a man by the name of Mr Norrell reveals that he is able to do magic, becoming a celebrity overnight. When he reaches London, there is greater skepticism on his powers, and to prove his worth, he brings a woman back from the dead. However, there are consequences, threatening the lives of many Englishmen. Shortly afterwards, another magician emerges, first as the apprentice of Mr Norrell, who delves into even deeper magic than Mr Norrell and juggles the fates of many.
Reading Level: Grade 10/11
Maturity Level: 10+ (Adult fiction, but no mature themes)
I recommend this as it was hilarious at times and well written, although stuffy, and the plot was quite interesting. Also, it was a refreshingly different take on fantasy and magic. I hate things written like classics, and I loved this so it's worth it no matter how annoying it can get.
If you liked this, you might like Melmoth the Wanderer, or Lud-in-the-Mist.
