The Way of Shadows
By Brent Weeks
The want of revenge changed a boy's life forever.
When Azoth at eleven watches his best friends maimed and raped before his eyes by a guild member, Rat, he swears to kill him at any cost. Establishing a contact with the city's greatest wetboy (assassin), he murderers Rat after he attempts to rape Azoth, and convinces the wetboy, Durzo Blint, to take him as an apprentice. He is forced to give up everything in his former life, even his name, becoming Kylar Stern. As he continues his training, invasion looms upon his country, to complicate matters. Assassinating as he goes, Kylar navigates politics and attempts to save his country with the help of his master.
Reading Level: Grade 8/9
Maturity Level: 18+ (High levels of violence, rape, whoring, swearing, etc.)
I recommend this as it is dark and complex and truthful about the world, with a dramatic, twisted plot.
If you like this, you might also like the Blade Itself, A Game of Thrones, the Lies of Locke Lamora, and the Black Company.
