English 8: The Chrysalids Found Poem
Express your understanding of a “big idea” (theme) within the story The Chrysalids.
Select words and phrases from two consecutive pages in the novel and put them together into a “found poem.” Found poetry is a type of poetry created by taking words, phrases, and sometimes whole passages from other sources and reframing them as poetry by making changes in spacing and lines, or by adding or deleting text, thus imparting new meaning.
Words from the story should be in red.
Any conjunctions or short words should be in green.
You may do this with a partner in a Google Doc. Your final poem should be posted on your blog.
Criteria
Your poem must accomplish the following:
o “big idea” should be obvious
o an emotional reaction by the reader
o create visual images; use effective detail and description
o demonstrate a thorough understanding of the story
o precise, vivid language
o uses literary techniques effectively (e.g., metaphor, irony)
Sample Found Poem (pages 62-63)
Mutants, Deviations, Old People
All contradict the true image; God’s disappointment is a bomb wrapped in the Tribulation,
The Deviations are the definition of disturbing: tribal, poisoned, strange and just different.
But to the South….
A city that contradicts every dream;
Islands of sin are pronounced, but allowed;
Running away to the civilized is possible.
