Disclaimer: I chose this article so I wouldn't ruin the book for anyone.
In the book, Mockingjay, the main character Katniss undergoes a transformation to make her appear more glamorous. Her job is to represent the rebels and present herself as a leader. The President believes that she must be made over by her team of makeup artists, stylists and hair dressers. As such, the naturally beautiful Katniss is morphed into a heavily made up, over-dressed mockingjay. In fact, when she views footage of herself she thinks, “I watch the woman on the screen. Her body seems larger in stature, more imposing than mine. Her face smudged but sexy….I do not know who this person is”(71). Her transformation is so extreme that she does not recognize herself.
This section of the book reminded me of the recent call to ban the Photoshopping of models in the United States and Britain. A recent article from The Globe and Mail, In an airbrushed world, how do you define what’s truly hot? discusses this issue. I found it fascinating that although a number of people speak out about the excessive Photoshopping of models, it continues. When the rebels prepare Katniss for her TV spot, she is essentially being made to look like someone else, much like the models who are edited. The article states that some models are not only Photoshopped beyond recognition, they are actually altered so they are not anatomically correct. This article interviews teens who saw before and after photos from magazines; they were shocked at what they saw.
Hopefully one day, the fashion industry will realize that ‘everyday people’ just want to see people like them in the magazines, much like Katniss’ team realized that she looked much better when she was more natural. It was very pleasing to see that the rebels realized that Katniss would be more powerful being herself than ‘glammed-up’ like a model.
